The Need
Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Prince George's County, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a voice for abused and neglected children. CASA, Prince George's County recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in court to ensure they are placed in safe, loving and permanent homes as quickly as possible. A CASA volunteer is appointed by a judge to provide an informative report and recommendations that will assist the judge in making important decisions in a child's life. It is the CASA program's goal to ensure safety and permanency for the children served.
Each day 8,775 incidents of child abuse and neglect are reported nationwide and approximately 1,188 children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care or institutions. Today, at least three children will die as a result of abuse and neglect. To many, these figures represent a world far away from their own. However, these figures are closer to home than ever before.
In Maryland 90,000 children and their families will be involved in the Maryland child welfare system this year. 13,000 children will live in foster care or institutions. 600 of these children live right here in Prince George's County, and will spend an average of nearly three years in foster care before finding a safe, permanent home.
